The chapter narrates the hypocrisy, practised by high class women of a suburban town named Tilling. After finishing her sketching, Miss Elizabeth Mapp moved towards her house. On the way, she saw a large van, transporting furniture. She thought that it meant one of the best houses at far end of the street had been taken. When she entered her home, she attended a trunk call through which she was informed that Lady Deal would come down by her motor that afternoon, so fix up a room for her ladyship. Miss Mapp passed this news at Tilling 76 in a hollow voice to Susie at the other end and disconnected the call without telling Susie about her real identity. Now Miss Mapp wanted to know as to who Susie was. She went there and handed over her card to Susie to give it to her Ladyship. On the way back home, she met Diva who also had an idea of the new tenant. In their conversation, they talked that Helena Herman, a male impersonator, was Lady Deal. Diva heaved a sigh of relief that she did not leave her card at Suntrap.
Suntrap. But Miss Mapp had already given her card to Susie. Now she went again to Susie at Suntrap, and explained with many apologies that she had left her card there by mistake. The news of the titled male impersonator spread through Tilling. Diva, along with the clergyman’s wife, Evia Bartlett arrived undetected at Suntrap to enquire about Lady Deal and met Susie who informed them that Lady Deal was there only for settling Miss Mackintosh in and expected to be there again tomorrow. After meeting Miss Mackintosh, they both were disappointed to know that the lady in the bath-chair, was not the repentant male impersonator. Miss Mackintosh told them that she was Florence’s old governess and Susie was her old nurse. Florence wanted to make them comfortable and at the same time, she wanted to have some little house to pop down to herself when tired. Further, Miss Mackintosh wanted to know about Miss Mapp who took her card back. Diva told that they looked up Lady Deal in a very old peerage of
hers. After knowing this, Miss Mackintosh exclaimed that it was an old peerage and therefore, she must have found that Lady Deal was Helena Herman whom she had seen ten years ago as a male impersonator at a music hall. Actually it was Miss Mackintosh in her bath chair and Miss Mapp had taken her as Lady Deal. Miss Mackintosh told them that Helena Herman's Lord Deal had died without children and Florence’s Lord Deal, her Lady Deal, succeeded.
